Summary:
Danny quit being a cop when his daughter was diagnosed with Acute Hyperactive Sensory Syndrome and went back to school, determined to figure out how to let Grace, and all the other kids with the same problem, live something like a normal life. Now he directs a research institution dedicated to just that. Their new patient is an adult onset HSS sufferer (which isn’t supposed to happen) and Danny decides this guy may be the key to figuring out how to help all the Sentinels.
Why You Should Read This:
This is an unusual take on the Sentinel meme. Sentinels are known, but no one knows how to help them. Since Sandberg’s PHD thesis was repudiated, no one realizes that he had found the key. But Danny is determined to find an answer because his daughter, and all the other little sentinels, are suffering, kept isolated, most their time zoned out or drifting.
The tone is perfect. Danny is a little more subdued than canon, but that is understandable. The OC’s are great. Steve is adorable. I really enjoyed this one.
Awww, yeah, this is a good one! I particularly love 2 things: 1st, that Danny *will* move heaven & earth to help Grace; & 2nd, that both Danny & Steve still ‘ring true’ to me even tho’ they’re in quite different situations & therefore don’t behave quite as they usually do in canon. This would be a great one to rec at sgamadison’s “Rec all the feels!fic” post. 🙂
(A thought re: point 1…. “Finding the Path” brought to mind “The Ship Who Mourned”, one of the stories in The Ship Who Sang by Anne MacCaffrey–not the plot but the determination of the protagonist to defy established procedure to actually help the kids recover, not just survive.)
