Why You Should Read This:
Omega ‘verse fic run automatically suffer from consent issues. The basic definition of an Omega contains the need to ‘breed’ (i.e. have sex) with any Alpha that will have him/her. Alphas have a similar biological imperative during their ‘Rut’ to have sex with anyone that will have them – again, consent isn’t always an issue.
That said, the story makes those issues an integral part of the story.
Dean Winchester is the atypical Omega; his size and general temperament is different from most Omegas. His own father expected Dean to present as an Alpha and when Dean turned out to be an Omega, the disappointment is more than Dean can deal with. Being a teen-ager, the disappointment and verbal abuse are more than Dean can bear and he runs away from home. It’s not long before Dean is tricked into slavery, used in a brothel for the entertainment of any Alpha who can afford it.
The story starts with Dean’s escape from the brothel after seven long years, to be picked up by Alpha Cas. Cas is a unlicensed physician, who unfairly lost his license over his treatment of an Omega patient.
This fic is not for the faint of heart. There is extended, graphic discussion of Dean’s abuse while in the brothel. Then there’s a fairly extended scene where Dean gives birth to his ‘pup’. And you will want to choke John Winchester when he makes his brief appearance in the fic. There are several other characters who really have no redeeming qualities.
On the other hand, there is extended discussion about Omega rights, how unfairly Omegas can be treated in society and a balancing number of redeeming characters. Cas is an Alpha with a heart of gold (would we expect anything else?), who is supportive of Dean’s personal rights, being careful to make sure Dean knows he has choices in his life.
There’s a thoughtfulness to this fic that is refreshing to see in an A/B/O universe. It does have the requisite hopeful ending, it’s not all sadness and gloom.
If the concept of the A/B/O universe doesn’t immediately squick you, the story is well written and I think you’ll enjoy it.
