Why You Should Read This:
I have always had a real problem believing in John as a sub. Part of that, probably a large part, may be because the first time I ever read any SGA fic it was Keira Marcos’ Ties That Bind, but what ever the cause, John was always a dom to me and even in the very well-written sub!John stories, I have to suspend disbelief really hard.
I expected the same problem with this. But, well, it was blackchaps, who wrote Turn Into Something Beautiful, which is well into the top ten fan fics I’ve ever read, so…
This is a Dom/Sub ‘verse. John finds being a sub and the commanding officer of the military on Atlantis a tough row to hoe at the best of times. His new 2IC is a top who has trouble taking orders from him, while Weir and Caldwell are both after him, for political rather than romantic reasons. Even trade missions are complicated by his sub status. All John wants is Rodney, but he is convinced that being collared will destroy any credibility he has as a commander, and he doesn’t think he deserves Rodney anyway.
The story has a quality of constant humor sprinkled with pathos and angst, all resting on top of a big dollop of romance, but is certified absolutely saccharine free. For me, you really can’t beat that combination. And sub!John is completely believable.
